People come to Kerala for Ayurveda from all over the world, and from the next district. The first decision is where to stay, and it shapes the whole experience more than the choice of programme does. Here's an honest comparison from a homestay that runs its own Ayurveda program, including when we'd send you somewhere else.
Three kinds of place
Broadly, Ayurveda stays in Kerala happen in hospitals, in resorts with a treatment wing, and in smaller homes or homestays with a treatment room and a visiting or resident doctor. The therapies have the same names in all three. The difference is the level of medical supervision, the surroundings and how much of your day is structured.
Ayurveda hospital
Suits: people treating a specific condition, intensive Panchakarma, long stays where close supervision matters.
Several doctors, trained therapists, daily reviews and a clinical routine. Rooms are functional, food is strictly controlled, and there's not much else to do. If your goal is treatment above everything else, this is usually the right choice.
Ayurveda resort
Suits: holidaymakers who want Ayurveda as part of a comfortable trip.
A spa-style treatment centre inside a hotel, often with a doctor on site, a pool, a restaurant and activities. Some run serious programmes; others offer a menu of massages. Ask which kind it is.
Ayurveda homestay
Suits: people doing a wellness programme who want quiet, home food and a family setting.
A small house with a treatment room and a qualified doctor, where the kitchen cooks to your plan and there are only a few other guests. You get the attention of a small place and a calmer routine. You won't get the medical depth of a hospital.
What to check anywhere
- The doctor's qualification. In India the standard degree for an Ayurvedic physician is a BAMS (Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery). Ask who the doctor is, and whether you'll see them before treatment starts.
- A consultation first. A proper programme begins with questions about your health, your medicines and your routine, not with a price list.
- Length of stay. Detox and rejuvenation therapies generally need at least a week to do much. Be wary of anything promising big results in two days.
- Kerala Tourism classification. Ayurveda centres can be classified as Ayur Silver, Ayur Gold or Ayur Diamond, depending on facilities and quality. It's a useful signal; it's not the only one.
- Who does the therapies, and whether men and women are treated by therapists of the same sex.
- Food. Ask whether meals are cooked to your plan or chosen from a menu.
Red flags
- Promises to cure a disease, or guaranteed weight loss.
- Being told to stop medicines your own doctor prescribed.
- No consultation, or a "consultation" that's really a sales chat.
- Strong therapies such as Panchakarma offered without a physician's supervision. Kerala's own Ayurveda practitioners warn these should only be done under a qualified doctor.
Where we fit
BelleVue is an Ayurveda homestay in Kozhikode. A qualified Ayurvedic doctor sees you first and plans your therapies, food and length of stay, usually 5 to 21 days. If what you need is hospital-level treatment, we'll tell you, and we'd rather you went somewhere better suited. If what you want is a calm detox or wellness stay by a river, with your family able to come along, see our programmes.
This guide is general information, not medical advice. Talk to your own doctor before starting any treatment programme, especially if you're pregnant, have a medical condition or take regular medicines.
