The Korapuzha river winding through coconut groves

The Korapuzha river: a short guide

Kozhikode's quiet backwater, from the people who live on its bank.

If you've only seen Kozhikode from the city or the beach, the Korapuzha is a surprise. It's a wide, slow river lined with coconut palms, fished every day from small wooden boats, and it has a calm you don't often find this close to a city.

BelleVue sits on its bank, so this is what we'd tell a friend who was coming to visit.

Where it comes from

The Korapuzha is formed by two streams, the Akalapuzha and the Punoorpuzha, which rise in the Western Ghats and run down through the Wayanad side of the district. They meet and flow west as one river into the Arabian Sea at Elathur, which is why you'll also hear it called the Elathur river. The Akalapuzha has its own broad, lake-like stretch further north, near Thikkodi.

The lower reaches are tidal, and the water is a mix of fresh and salt. That's why you see mangroves along the banks, and why the fishing is good.

What to do on the river

Houseboat cruises

Kerala's houseboats are usually associated with Alappuzha and Kumarakom, but the Korapuzha has its own. A few hours on deck gives you the village life on both banks: people washing at the kadavu steps, kids swimming, fishermen mending nets. Overnight trips are possible too.

Speedboats and canoes

A short speedboat ride is the quickest way to see a long stretch of the river. A canoe is the opposite: slow, quiet and close to the water, good for birdwatching along the mangroves.

Fishing

Watch the cast-net fishermen at dawn, and you'll see a skill that's been passed down for generations. You can fish from a jetty, or ask to go out with one of the local boatmen.

Just sitting

The best thing to do on the Korapuzha might be nothing. Sunrise and sunset on the water are both worth getting up, or staying in, for.

When to go

October to March is the easy season: dry days, calm water and soft light in the mornings and evenings. April and May are hot, so get out early. June to September brings the monsoon; the river runs high and brown and very green on both sides. Some boat trips depend on the weather on the day.

Staying on the river

Most visitors see the Korapuzha on a day trip from the city. If you want to wake up beside it, BelleVue is on its bank at Olloorkadav, near Koyilandy, with a jetty and gazebo over the water. We can arrange houseboats, speedboats, canoes and fishing for our guests.
