A pool changes a Kerala holiday. The midday heat stops being something to hide from, and children have something to do between meals. But "pool villa" covers everything from a plunge pool in a city bungalow to a resort with forty rooms around one pool. These are the questions worth asking before you pay an advance, whoever you book with. Including us.
"Private pool" can mean two things
On listing sites, "private pool" sometimes means private to your villa, and sometimes means private to the property, shared by every room in it. Both are fine, but they're very different holidays. Ask directly: if I book one room, who else will be in the pool?
Ten things to check
- Who else uses it. Your group only, the other rooms, or day visitors on a package?
- Depth, and whether there's a shallow end. This matters most if you're bringing small children or weak swimmers.
- Railings and barriers, especially if the villa is on a river, lake or cliff edge.
- How it's kept clean. Ask how often it's cleaned and read recent reviews that mention the pool. Cloudy water in photos is a warning.
- Hours and lighting. Can you swim after dark? Are there lights?
- Shade. The Kerala sun at noon is strong. Loungers with no shade get used for ten minutes.
- The monsoon. Ask what happens to the pool in heavy rain, and whether it stays open from June to September.
- Music and party rules. Many villas sit in residential areas and limit loud music. If you're planning a celebration, say so before you book.
- Food. Does someone cook, or are you ordering in? In the countryside, ordering in may not be an option.
- Travel time. A villa an hour further away saves money and costs a day of driving. Ask for the time, not the kilometres.
Where in Kerala?
- By the sea in places like Marari and Varkala, a pool is welcome because the sea along much of the coast is rough, particularly in the monsoon.
- In the hills of Wayanad and Munnar, the setting is cool and green, but pool water can be cold in the morning.
- In the cities, Kochi and Kozhikode both have villas with plunge pools, handy for families visiting relatives.
- On a river or the backwaters, you get calm water and a view, often with boating from the property.
How BelleVue answers the list
We're a riverside pool villa in Kozhikode, so here are our own answers, so you can compare. The pool is only for people staying at BelleVue, never for day visitors. Book the whole villa and it's yours alone; book a room and you share it with at most three other rooms. It's raised on a timber deck with steps and handrails, with a glass railing on the river side. It has underwater lights, and loungers on the deck facing the river. Our kitchen cooks Kerala and Malabar food to order, and Calicut city is about 45 minutes away. For anything else on the list, including the depth, ask us on WhatsApp and we'll answer before you book.
