Most weekends, Calicut people head to Wayanad and spend half the trip on the ghat road. There's an easier option much closer: the Korapuzha river, about 45 minutes north of the city. Here's a simple two-day plan.
Saturday
Late morning: leave the city
Head north towards Koyilandy, then inland to Kunnathara. You'll be there before lunch, which matters, because lunch is the point. Ask for a Malabar fish curry or a vegetarian sadya.
Afternoon: pool, then river
Spend the hot hours in the pool. Around four, take a speedboat or a canoe out on the Korapuzha, or just walk down to the jetty gazebo with a book.
Evening: Kappad Beach
Kappad is 25 minutes away. Get there for the sunset, look at the 1498 Vasco da Gama memorial, and come back for a campfire in the garden and a barbecue on the deck.
Sunday
Early: the fishermen
Be on the jetty by 6:30. The cast-net fishermen are out, the water is flat, and it's the quietest the river gets.
Morning: something slow
An Ayurvedic massage, a swim, or a short drive to the Pisharikavu temple at Kollam or the mangrove museum at Koyilandy.
Afternoon: head home
Check-out is at 11, but ask about a late lunch before you leave. You'll be back in the city by evening without having spent your weekend in traffic.
Good to know
- Best season: October to March. The monsoon months are lovely too, just plan boat trips around the rain.
- Bring: swimwear, light cotton clothes, mosquito repellent for the evenings, and a book.
- Groups: for six or more, book the whole villa so the pool and garden are yours.
- Pets: welcome at no extra charge.
