Kozhikode, which most people still call Calicut, is a city that's easy to like and harder to stay in well. It's spread out, the traffic is real, and the best things about the district, the beaches, the rivers and the hills, are mostly outside the city. Where you stay changes your trip more than you'd think.
Here's how we'd break it down. We're obviously biased towards the river, so we've tried to be fair about when somewhere else makes more sense.
Kozhikode city centre
Good for: business trips, weddings, hospital visits, food lovers on a short stay.
Around Mavoor Road, the railway station and the area near SM Street you're close to the restaurants, the shopping and the offices. You can walk to Paragon or Rahmath for lunch and to SM Street for halwa in the evening. Hotels here are practical rather than charming, and most homestays in the city are in residential lanes.
The downside is noise and traffic. If you're here for more than two nights on holiday, you'll probably wish you'd stayed somewhere greener.
Beach road and the coast
Good for: sunsets, evening walks, families who want the sea.
Kozhikode Beach is a promenade more than a swimming beach, but it's lively in the evening. Further north, Kappad is quieter, with the memorial to Vasco da Gama's 1498 landing and a handful of beach resorts and homestays. The sea along this coast can be rough, especially from June to September, so check before swimming.
Near the airport
Good for: early flights, one-night stopovers.
Calicut International Airport is at Karipur, south of the city. The towns around it, like Kondotty and Ramanattukara, have hotels that make an early check-in easy. There isn't much to see nearby, so it works for a night, not a holiday.
Koyilandy and the Korapuzha
Good for: slow holidays, families, couples, Ayurveda, remote work.
North of the city the land gets greener and the rivers widen into backwaters. The Korapuzha runs out to the sea at Elathur, and its banks around Kunnathara and Ollur are lined with coconut palms and old village houses. This is where BelleVue is, and it's the area we know best.
You're about 45 minutes from the city, 20 from Koyilandy town and 25 from Kappad Beach. In exchange, you get river views, quiet nights and room to spread out. It's the closest thing Kozhikode has to the Alappuzha backwaters, without the crowds.
Towards the hills
Good for: nature, trekking, cooler weather.
East of the city, the road climbs towards Thamarassery, Kakkayam and Peruvannamuzhi, and eventually up the ghat to Wayanad. There are plantation stays and forest resorts out here. It's beautiful, but it's a long way from the coast, the city and the airport, so it suits people spending most of their time in the hills.
How to choose
- If you need to be in Calicut city every day, stay in the city.
- If you're flying out at dawn, stay near Karipur for the last night.
- If you want the sea, look at Kappad.
- If you want quiet, space, a pool and good home food, stay on the river. We'd love to have you at BelleVue.
You can also split the trip: a night or two in the city for the food, then the rest of the week somewhere quieter.
